Brewin Dolphin Keelboat Weekend at RNIYC Belfast Lough
8 SB3s from Belfast Lough turned out for a bit of mayhem on the 5th and 6th of September, joining the 3 RS Elites and 8 Squibs which were competing in the 2 day Brewin Dolphin Keelboat Weekend at RNIYC.
A lovely forecast of 15 knots from the SW soon blew away to be replaced by a fairly steady 20-25 knots breeze, and a few firehose 30+ knot gusts. Sadly, when the windex blew off the Committee Boat, the fleet were sent back to the moorings, never to return that day, but leaving enough time for some spectacular SB3 blasting in the admittedly puffy conditions.
Top prize of some Glam Glassware went to Greg Bell, tied on points with Pete Kennedy and Flipper Flanagan, but split on countback after three really tight and tricky races on Sunday in F2-3 – all rather benign following the Jet Fighter action the previous day. Top Gun prize goes to Flash Gordon, CJ and Rosie, for their team’s faultless victory, but also a Top Plumber prize for Tom Molloy, never one to disaapoint in the crashing stakes, with a beautifully managed nose plant, caught on film for the ecstatic audience on the PRO vessel, who were clearly enjoying the crash and burn SB3s on their fly pasts.
Great craic altogether, and yet again showing why all you need is about 5-6 SB3s and load of gas, and you have the perfect recipe for a lorra fun!!
