Team MST from Russia takes 2nd Winter Series in Cascais

Very light winds and warm weather prevailed for the 2nd SB20 Winter Series in Cascais that happened on 1-2 December at Clube Naval de Cascais. The fleet of over 35 boats with 12 foreign teams made it a competitive event!

The event witnessed a presentaton of the special trophy from Tony Castro, the father of SB20, that will be awarded to the winning team for the overall victory in all Winter Series of the season annually.

The race committee was challenged by the conditions, but managed to pull out a race on Saturday and two races on Sunday. Team MST of Vasily Grigoriev, Maxim Kuzmim and Mikhail Markin dominated the event with a 1, 2, 1 giving no chance to any one. The Russian team is already an habitué in Cascais and this year they have committed for the Winter Series and are doing an amazing job that is translating into results.

Santa himself presenting the awards to team MST

“The weather conditions were tough for us, because light winds are not our preferable ones. So I am really happy that we managed to win, regardless of the tough competition. We are going to take part in all events of the Winter Series in Cascais. I would like to say warm words about the organisation. Everything was on the high level. Thank you again!” – commented in the end a very satisfied Vasily Grigoriev.

Runner up Team Animal/SailCascais of local Vasco Serpa tried hard, but the russian team this time proved too strong to beat. 3rd place was for the team of Porto, Another Affair of Miguel and Francisco Olveira with Gustavo Lima at the helm. The former Laser World Champion and Dragon European Champion is delivering consistent results this season with different teams. So far two podium finishes in the first two events of the season.

The regatta is traditionally held at Clube Naval de Cascais for a number of Classes, including Optimist, 420, Lasers and collects young sailing talents from all over Portugal. Lots of fun and smiling kids around and where else do you get the real Santa to deliver the awards?!

The SB20 fleet will gather again for the 3rd event of the Winter Series on 19-20th January 2019. Overall results of the 2nd SB20 Cascais Winter Series as well as access information for the upcoming events at CNCascais please click here.
