Solent Series 4 & Results
The final race of the Solent Series took place on the weekend of the 26th and 27th September. Hosted by the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and supported by Wight Vodka, the 17 entries arrived in Lymington to bright blue skies, warm temperatures and little or no wind. Registration and weighing finished and with a whisper of a northerly breeze, Tony Blachford, the PRO, left the pontoon with his team and the mark layers. The boats left soon after and made the short half hour trip to the starting area.
With the wind both backing and veering, the first race finally started in around 6 knots of wind. Ben Williamson in Black Box scored the first bullet with David Cunnings in Rumbleflurg second and Libby Greenhaigh and Mark Greenaway in Team Green taking the third place Despite the wind rarely gusting more than 10 knots, two more races were sailed on Saturday, Niall Peelo in Threesome took the next bullet and Team Green came in second, followed by Jo Lloyd and Sue Antonelli in Robina, in third. Threesome took the last gun of the day followed by Andrew Oddie racing In your Pocket and a second third for Team Green.
It was a testing day for the race committee and the sailors, but the Après Sail Bar greeted the sailors as they returned home with a welcome Wight Vodka cocktail, beer and nachos. Sunday dawned cool and very sunny but with a little more breeze, however, once again the wind couldn’t find a direction to stay in.
The first start of the day resulted in a General Recall, but the fourth race finally started with the ‘I’ flag flying. Another race and another new winner, Simon Perry in Giraffe, took what was to be the final race of the series from Team Green and Rumbleflurg. Team Green didn’t take one first place, however with their consistent results they beat Rumbleflurg by 2 points with Threesome in third place. Conditions were extremely difficult this weekend, and all credit should go to the PRO and his team for achieving the four out of six races scheduled.
