Here we go, 2020!
As we turn the page into the new year and more exciting SB20 events to come, we allow ourselves to remind us all how great the boat, that we are racing, is! We caught up with the new SB20 Class President, Jerry Dowling during the SB20 Worlds in Hyères and asked to give us a wrap up of the current state of the Class. See below in our video:
The start of the year is looking amazing with our 2020 Worlds venue – Clube Naval de Cascais getting into shape and already seeing a solid presence of 45 boats for the 3rd SB20 Cascais Winter Series. As soon as next weekend on 25th-26th January there will be teams from Russia, Ukraine, Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Finland, Switzerland and Brazil joining the ever strong local fleet with National Champions and youth and female teams.
Despite the impressive numbers, Vasco Serpa, from SailCascais, is still not satisfied: “We can see higher participation, we want to break 50 and reach fast 60 boats in our course during the regular season. It’s coming, we know it’s coming, we are working hard for it, but we will have to wait a little more. We have some boats still stored and a lot of inquiries of people either to bring their boats or to rent.”
John Pollard on Xcellent from Great Britain, Artem Basalkin’s BTeam and MST of Vasily Grigoriev both from Russia, #GameChanger of Ukrainian Julia Freespirit, Jeroen van der Velden with 3J’s and No Worries of Brazilian legend Gastao Brun are some of the foreign teams on the list. More than that, the current SB20 Class president Jerry Dowling will be joining the fleet on The Bear sailing with his brother Jimmy Dowling and Stefan Hyde. The previous Class President Ed Russo is also on the list sailing with his long sailing partner Gilles Favennec and another French sailor – Mikael Mergui, who has sailed with Andrew Smith at the French Grand Slam ahead of the Worlds 2019 and just recently did the Syney Hobart Race with Andrew. Exciting!
Shortly after the 3rd SB20 Cascais Winter Series in the other part of the world another important competition will be taking place. The SB20 Worlds 2021 venue – One 15 Marina in Singapore will be hosting their SB20 Asian Grand Slam & Asia Pacific Championship along with the SB20 Nationals during the period of 5 days from the 5th to the 9th of February. The coverage for the event is already under way and soon the participants list will be announced.
