2009 UK SB20 Calendar Announced

2009 UK SB20 Calendar Announced

The Laser SB3 UK Class Association is pleased to announce the 2009 Calendar of Events. The calendar has been structured to cater for the various SB3 regional fleets around the country, with the fleets then coming together for the major national and international events.

In response to strong demand, a Solent Series has been developed to provide the class with big fleet racing, one of the key attractions of the boat, for the 120+ Solent based boats. The Solent Series comprises 4 Grand Prix weekends, to be hosted from Hamble, Seaview, Yarmouth and Lymington. A new collection of trophies are currently being commissioned to support this series. Together with the traditionally strong spring series, Cowes week and winter series, there is a full season of local racing for the southern based fleet.

The growing SB3 fleets in the North and Scotland will enjoy racing at Pwllheli, Blyth (Northumberland YC), Ullswater and will also race in the Scottish Series in Tarbet.

A new event for the SB3’s in 2009 will be held over the Easter weekend at Rutland, the inaugural Inland Championships. This is likely to be a well attended event, never before have the SB3’s enjoyed fleet racing across the long Easter weekend.

After an absence of several years, the fleet will return to Brest in Brittany in association with the popular Ecole Navale regatta over the second May bank holiday (22-25 May inclusive). Racing will be on the open water with boats and social run from Morgat at the top of the Douarnenez Bay. This should attract a good mix of the French, Dutch, Irish and UK fleets, and a chance to enjoy some early season Breton hospitality! Discussions are underway for subsidised accommodation and overnight ferry crossings Portsmouth to St Malo and places may be restricted so please e-mail your interest to mark@rigginggurus.com

The 2009 UK National Championships have been awarded to the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club in Falmouth. After consultation with the fleet and a bidding process with a short list of clubs, Falmouth was clearly the destination of choice, having successfully hosted the event back in 2003. Four days of racing are scheduled from Wednesday 24th June – Saturday 27th June. A warm up/feeder regatta will be hosted on by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club from Saturday 20th – Monday 22nd June. The West Country fleet continues to develop, and the event should attract entries from the strong Irish fleet.

The 2009 World Championships, organised by the SB3 World Council and the Clube Naval de Cascais take place in Portugal from 30th August – 5th September. This will be an event not to be missed for the UK fleet following the popularity and success of the 2008 World Championships in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.

UK class chairman Jerry Hill commented “2008 has been a big year for the class, with the best year yet of new boat sales, the classes first World Championships and the successfully implemented weight equalisation rule changes. For 2009 the program offers local racing for those who prefer to sail close to home, coupled with a variety of highly competitive national and international events in some great locations. It promises to be a great year for the class”.
