Tricky Conditions play out on the first day of the 2nd SB20 Cascais Winter Series!
A strong fleet of 33 boats from 6 countries showed up at the starting line of 2nd SB20 WS in Cascais today. Sailors were gifted with clear skies, 8 to 16 knots of shifty North to NorthEast winds. After a short delay due to the wind shifts the first race got underway. At the top mark team Another Affair from Porto with the 5x Olympian, 2003 Laser World and 2013 Dragon European Champion Gustavo Lima on board took the lead and slowly built a comfortable gap to the rest of the pack. Vasco Passanha with Team Patris took second after a bit of a downwind fight with Team Animal of the Portuguese Champion Vasco Serpa and Team MST of Vasily Grigoriev from Russia 3rd and 4th respectively. The first race gave a clear sign that consistency in such conditions and line up was going to pay by the end of day.
For the 2nd race Team MST manage to find that right hand side corner shift and took the lead. The rest was a walk in the park for them as they controlled the fleet from a safe distance. The rest of the fleet was fighting in the tricky and shifty conditions of today. 2nd place went to Madeira Islands of John Tavares followed by Team Roff/Meritis of Hugo Mastbaum.
Third race was probably the most difficult as pressure differential became even more pronounced as the wind was lowering a bit on intensity. Nataliya Kravets of Team Matrioshka sailed a beautiful and solid race. They built a small gap on the shifty first upwind and managed to stay ahead despite the very difficult conditions and the attacks of a strong group of chasing boats. 49er Portugues Olympian Jorge Limafrom Cascais took second place and Madeira Islands closed the podium on the last race of the day. The race was shortened at the 2nd upwind and everybody sailed happily to the Club where they were greeted with hot chocolate.
“Strong fleet, great conditions, happy sailors!” was the comment of SailCascais‘ founder Vasco Serpa. “It is great to see such a nice group of sailors competing in this excellent conditions at this time of the Year. Cascais is the place!” SailCascais rented out 7 boats. “We are very happy with the performance of our boats, we had two race winners and the leader of the regatta renting from us. Anyone that wants to sail SB20 in Cascais and rents from us will be ready to win”. He concluded with a smile.
