Grand Slam – HYERES

A great long weekend in Hyeres for the first SB20 Grand Slam of the season. We had a good fleet of 25 boats, representing France, GB, Russia, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Monaco. Like the World Championships last year, for a Mediterranean venue, Hyeres really gives great sailing conditions. On Friday we had very British weather, with 35 knots, some rain, then clearing up and dropping right away to nothing forcing race 3 to be abandoned, much to the relief of some (us!)…

Day 2 was warm, sunny and a building breeze starting at 10 knots and the day finishing in a perfect 20kts. 4 excellent races were completed. For day 3 the forecast was always to be pretty light and the race team tried in vain to get us racing – one race was started and despite the Sportsboatworld team again showing how average they can be in 2-3 knots of wind, had actually jagged their way back into the race when the race committee bowed to the inevitable and sent us all in….

Well done to COYCH for running some excellent racing and some great hospitality in the evenings. Bringing kegs of beer and fresh pizza to the crane when you are de-rigging and packing the boats away is a new one on me, and sets the bar very high! Thanks again to the SAX bar which always also looks after us so well. Best news was selling our trusty charter boat on the dock and not even having to de-rig it!

Hyeres is a great venue – good facilities, great restaurants, good breezes. The SB20 fleet will be back later in the year for the French Nationals, and no doubt for a Grand Slam event in May 2015.
