OLYMPIC TALENT DOMINATES PORTUGUESE NATIONALS IN CASCAIS
The SB20 Portuguese Nationals of the 2015 season took place in Cascais, Portugal, earlier this month.
The Clube Naval de Cascais is the venue for next year’s 2016 SB20 World Championships, and the Portuguese National Championship attracted 23 teams to the legendary Atlantic venue, including visitors from Russia, Australia and Britain.
Nine races were held with Diogo Cayolla and his team of Bernardo Freitas and Nuno Barreto on ‘AllaBoard’ scoring a hugely impressive five wins to take the National Champion title overall. The ‘AllaBoard’ team also scored a second and third place to hold a 10-point advantage over their nearest rivals. Cayolla has competed at the highest level of sailing for two decades, including representing Portugal at no fewer than three Olympic Games – Atlanta, Sydney and Athens – in three different classes – Star, 49er and Tornado.
In second was the ‘Animal/ Mobiag Clever Mobility’ team, also from Cascais, who won Race 4 and other wise scored a very consistent regatta with three seconds, one third and three fifth places. Third went to ‘Ozmose’, who also put down a solid scoreline with all top six finishes, until a DNF in the final Race 9. The remaining two races wree won by ‘Boom Bap Wear’, who finished fourth overall.
The 2016 World Championships will be held from August 28-September 3, 2016 at Clube Naval de Cascais, one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world – currently welcoming some of the biggest names in sailing to the RC44 World Championships, which they are hosting this week.
