SB20 Class joins St. Maarten Heineken Regatta in 2020!
Hot news arrived from the Netherlands about SB20 Class travelling overseas in 2020! We are going to the Caribbean to join the renowned St. Maarten Heineken Regatta that has been running since 1980 and supported by its title sponsor Heineken since 1983. In 2020 the event will celebrate its 40th anniversary and thanks to the join efforts of the Dutch Class Association and the SB20 Class management this has become possible.
Powered by the cooling northeast trade winds and run by an experienced, innovative and friendly race team, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is a four day event with a combination of windward-leeward / coastal races blended together into an irresistible cocktail of racing chosen to suit each class. Four race committees provide custom-tailored racing for thousands of sailors from more than 35 countries.
With Heineken as the long-standing sponsor the parties are exceptional! You have a chance to experience fantastic legendary nightlife at varied locations around the island for which it is famous. St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has a reputation for hosting artists like the Black Eyed Peas, UB40, Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, The Commodores and others. Tired and happy sailors enjoy partying with an ice-cold Heineken in their hand and sand between their toes as they watch the sun go down.
“This year the Heineken Regatta reached out to me to join their 40th anniversary regatta,” – says Martijn Buitenhuis, president of the Dutch SB20 Association. – “Our class enjoys sailing in pretty places and this is where it all comes together, so we gladly accepted the invitation. It’s going to be some serious SB20 sailing in the conditions of the Caribbean as well as lots of fun, it will be awesome! The winner can be the first SB20 Champion of the Kingdom of the Netherlands 🙂 I think that all the international teams should consider this unique opportunity. We are in!”
For boat owners who are interested to participate the best otpion is to plan the transportation of the boats after the SB20 Worlds in Hyères, France in October 2019. Planned schedule of the event:
Last week of February: Arrival of boats
Sunday, 1st March: Warm up race
Thursday, 5th March – Race day 1
Friday, 6th March – Race day 2
Saturday, 7th March – Race day 3
Sunday, 8th March: Race day 4 and Prize giving
Monday, 9th March: Loading of boats
Ed Russo, the SB20 Class president commented: “The SB20 is one of the most internationally diverse classes. The SB20 boat owners love to travel and the Heineken regatta 2020 generated a lot of interest as soon as it was announced. The event also fits well into our world events having the 2019 Worlds in Hyères and the 2020 Worlds in Cascais. The Class encourages boat owners to ship their boats directly to St. Maarten after the Worlds in Hyères. For other alternatives we are open to discuss and support our members in this transfer.”
This is an early call, but you we know that SB20 Class members plan their overseas sailing ahead and this will require some planning. For all questions you may contact the Dutch Class Association and Martijn Buitenhuis. For making the right decision check the 2019 Heineken Regatta promo video and get inspired for 2020!
