Team Give me 5 of Robin Follin, Gaulthier Germain, Emeric Michel and Zou Schmmel (France Jeune) won the French SB20 Nationals in Hyères, the hosting venue of SB20 Worlds 2019! After three days and 8 races with one discard the team scored three 1st and two 2nd with worst result in 7th position. In conditions of various winds from 5 to 25 knots with a bit of rain on Friday, Robin confirms it was tricky to race this time of year in Hyères.
“We haven’t touched our SB20 since the World Championship in Hobart 11 months ago, but the feeling with the boat and the speed were good! We haven’t made too many mistake with the wind that was sometimes a bit tricky.. That’s why in the end we won Novembre à Hyeres for the second time in a row! We have a lot of work to do for the next meeting in one year, our goal is clearly to bring the title home again!” – said Robin Follin after the awards ceremony.
Second place was for team Rhapsopie of Alan Roig with Hugo Feydit at helm sailing with Sebastien Soupey and Adele Marevery. Strong competitors who were 4th at the Worlds in Hobart, they are consistent in their climb up towards the podium next year.
“Nice to see 18 SB20 boats sailing at Novembre à Hyères, so huge thanks to all foreign crews who came here! It was three nice days of sailing with 8 races sailed in various wind conditions. We are very happy to finish 2nd all the team did a great job and it confirms our constant improvement,” – said happy Hugo Feydit.
Italian SB20 Class president Giamma Paulin and Olympic coach Ian Ainsley who trains Mári Erdi, a 20-year old Laser Radial sailor curently ranked 4th in the world, closed the podium in third. Ian, who sails with his good friend Giamma once every few years last sailed the SB20 together in 2015 in Garda. “Giamma’s boat’s trailer got damaged on the way to the event and we were going to cancel our entry, but Ed Russo was able to arrange quickly a good charter boat for us to use. The waves were very nice and it was great to be in the SB20 again. Some French and Russian teams are very good! It’s always fun to sail with Giamma and I think it was good training for Mari to do the tactics. It was the first time for her to sail an SB20, she did very well. We enjoyed the sailing tremendously! Thanks to all who made the regatta possible,” – said Ian Ainsley.
Current European Champion, VIS Sailing Team featured a new crew set up onboard with Timur Sabirzyanov helming this time and after the first day being a bit tricky for them they managed two 1st and one 2nd places, having finished 5th overall. Another Russian team Absolut of Igor Ginzburg, despite not winning any races and a discarded 16th finish they had a better score than VIS allowing them to finish ahead of them in 4th position.
Congrats to the winners and all participants! Thanks to the organizing committee for great racing and the hosting club COYCH for warm reception ahead of the epic season with the Worlds coming up next year in Hyères!
