“Lovely brutal” 2nd SB20 Cascais Winter Series

Team Day Off of returning to the SB20 Class Olympian Diogo Cayolla, 470 Portuguese sailor Joāo Matos Rosa with 1996 Atlanta bronze medallist Nuno Barreto from Clube Naval de Cascais topped the 46 boat fleet present at the 2nd SB20 Winter Series in Cascais.

Team Day Off sailed a very consistent regatta scoring 2, 1, 8, 2, 2, allowing them to skip the brutal last race.

“It was great to be back competing in the SB20 in Cascais. The most dynamic and competitive class locally. It was a great result for us but crowns our team work. Nuno and Joao were at the top of their game”

The two days of the 2nd Winter Series saw totally different conditions! On Saturday a Westerly breeze of 7 to 10 knots with a big and choppy swell challenged the fleet.

John Pollard from Torbay, UK, on Xcellent sailed the best on that first day scoring 6, 2, 2. Consistency on the tricky conditions were of the essence. Cayolla trailed them and in third was Another Affair of Miguel Oliveira from Clube de Vela Atlantico with 2016 420 World Champion Diogo Costa at the helm.

Mother Nature had another script for the second day and decided to unleash a strong Northerly breeze in the west coast of Europe. The wind started at the 15 to 20 knots range, but as the day progressed it kept creeping higher with 20+ consistent on the course with gusts hitting 36 knots. Ouchhhh! It was carnage!

By the last race only 15 boats survived. A day of pain, a day of brutality, but also a day of fun! All in all a day to remember. Vasco Serpa and his mates on PussPuss/SailCascais were best of the day with two bullets and a third place and climbed to 2nd overall.

Jose Paulo Ramada on Dom Pedro Hotels, scored a second on the chaotic last race behind Ukrainian #Gamechanger of Julia Freespririt and held their game to finish third overall.
