Italian Nationals 4/8 June – One Crew’s View.
The ‘home’ programme for mid summer didn’t appeal hugely to Finitor’s crew so we went for this one. It was held as part of the mainly IRC/ IMS ‘Trofeo Gavitello d’ Argento’, one of the main and clearly heavily sponsored events of the glam YC d’ Punta Ala on the coast of Tuscany, opposite Elba.
The club is hugely pround of being the club of the Prada AC Challenge
The regatta had an entry of 120 but on the one design racecourse there were starts for the14 Sbs and slightly larger fleets of X35s and Este 24s. 11 races were programmed over 4 days and 10 were completed. The race management was absolutely first class. The breezes were generally kind and ranged from surfing /not quite planing down to light. The conditions were apparently unusual (aren’t they always!) and the windshifts, especially on the day there were huge thunderstorms in the mountains, kept tacticians well and truly on their toes!
The event was won by by Luca Bacci in Alfa 146 (3187) with a new crew who sailed out of their socks.
2nd to 6th was open until the last day but ultimately a new team, ‘Astonbank’, lead by Vittorio Costa (3425) came 2nd and we came 3rd.
The entry was Italian, plus 2 Belgian/ Dutch boats and a few French.
The welcome, banter ashore, bars (especially Porticciolo!!) and restaurants were all first rate. The yacht club’s enthusiasm and budget to promote the ‘Trofeo’ ensured it was tremendous value, especially for international visitors. 250 Euro included the entry fee, craning, berthing, free use of a smart 6 bed apartment and especially the ‘Trofeo Dinner’ – a first rate dinner with free wine, beer, dessert wine etc for all participants on the clubs terrace, live music, watching the sun settle beyond the ‘infinity’ pool and behind Elba.
This was a cracking event we will not forget!
Watch out for news of the Dutch/ Belgian Nats possibly at Hoorn in October and the French Nats at Hyeres a little later……..
Looking forward to Cork already!!
