Dart SB20 at Airlie Beach Race Week

The exciting Dart SB3 fleet provided another spectacular race in conditions which tested crew skills and endurance over a windward leeward ‘torture track’ on Pioneer Bay today.

Former Queensland State of Origin Rugby League forward Michael McLean was reintroduced to a few more muscle testing experiences when he helmed Wagop to a 1 minute 19 second win over brother John in Marine Tech Electric and the championship leader Tasqua Youth (Matthew Johns).

All three crews staggered on the edge at times and thru caution to the wind on the wild downwind running angles.

The Sunshine Coast Tasqua Youth crew who clearly outpaced their older rivals in the earlier four races were a little light on body weight particularly on the slogs upwind.

They also had to contend with the unrelenting wind shadow applied by the Marine Tech crew who desperately needed to improve their points table.

As expected the Sunshine Coast crew known as the ‘Schoolboys’ because of the age had to protect their sailing space when the older and more experienced John McLean purposely applied his tactical attention.

Wagop had jumped clear on the final run while Marine Tech Electric and Tasqua Youth entered into their private duel to decide the minor places.
The margin between the two after 1 hour and 46 minutes of intense racing can down to just 16 seconds at the finish.

However after five heats Tasqua Youth with a 2-1-1-1-3 score hold a four point split over Marine Tech Electric 4-2-2-2-2 while today’s winner Wagop holds third place on count back with 3-4-3-4-1 over Magees IGA (Paul Hunt) 1-1-4-3-4.
