Busy winter season opener for SB20 Portugal
First event of the SB20 Cascais Winter Series 2019/2020 has finished in epic conditions! 25 boats participated in this regatta, only one week after the #SB20Worlds2019.
The winners of this opening event – the champions of 2018/2019 SB20 Cascais Winter Series – team MST of Vasily Grigoriev, Maxim Kuzmin and Mikhail Markin. The local PussPuss / SailCascais team of Vasco Serpa, Zilas Dunke Nascimento and João Tomás took second place. Igor Ginzburg’s Absolut with Oleg Krivov, Zhanna Manukyan and Olympic medalist Hugo Rocha closed the podium.
The start of the three-day Cascais SB20 Winter Series 2019/2020 season opener was postponed until Saturday. With a cloudy day and light wind on Friday the Race Committee did not have enough wind to fire the first Winter Series race. After a slow start the event began on Saturday with the wind between W and NW from 8 to 13 knots and the 25-boat fleet started the first regatta at 12:05.
John Tavares with Luis Queiroz and Guilherme Almeida aboard Madeira Islands took line honors of the first race. Vasily Griogoriev’s MST with Maxim Kuzmin and Mikhail Markin won the other two races, thus closing the first day in first place in the overall standings. Peter Straton’s SoFly with Francisco Garcia and Bernardo Lencastre had a consistent day with 5th, 4th and 7th and were placed in second place after Day 2. Closing the podium of the first racing day was Vasco Serpa’s PussPuss / SailCascais with Zilas Dunke-Nascimento and João Tomás with 9th, 3rd and 5th finishes.
Day 3 with the Northwest wind between 12 and 14 knots started as scheduled at 12.00 with the first win by NACEX of Miguel Graça, Diogo Machado Pinto and Hugo Rodrigues. In the second racing day Vasco Serpa pushed the PussPuss / SailCascais team to make the best of the entire fleet and so secured his place on the podium.
In the sixth and final race of the 1st SB20 Cascais Winter Series Paulo Palha’s Bravo with Rita Leal Faria, André Gonçalves and António José Barros finished beautifully in first.
This regatta has seen five different boats winning that demonstrates the diversity of SB20 fleet in Cascais. Everyone can win! The second event of Cascais SB20 Winter Series will run together with the traditional Christmas Regatta on November 30th and December 1st.

Busy season ahead of the SB20 World Championships is on the table with five Winter Series events, followed by a Spring Cup and then the Portuguese Nationals in the enf of June concluding with the pre-Worlds culmination at Cascais Vela, a 3-day warm-up regatta ahead of the SB20 World Championships 2020 on 31st August – 5th September.
