3rd SB20 Cascais Winter Series won by Russians, again!

The first day of the 3rd SB20 Cascais Winter Series brought as forecasted a westerly breeze of 15 to 20 knots that build up along the day and hit peaks in the high 20s at points as clouds and rain hit the course.

The sea as a result of the wind started to give beautiful surfing opportunities. Team MST of Vasily Grigoriev from Pirogovo, Russia, outsailed the whole fleet in these conditions to score two solid bullets.

“We are very happy. It was awesome! But tomorrow is another day!” commented a super satisfied Vasily in the end of Day 1.

Amazing work by the whole team displaying outstanding boat handling and setting the speed to beat. The day also brought some new teams to the top of the table with very good performances. Outstanding was also the team of Carl Linne II of John Harald from Sweden that sailed for second in the two races.

Team #GameChanger of Julia Freespirit, the Ukrainian national champions back in Cascais after a break sailed very consistently for a 3 and 4, sitting in 3rd place at the end of the day.

Then two Portuguese surprises Wildebeest with Filipe Silva back in the SB20s sitting in 4th with a 10 and 3 in the day and Miúdas of Margarida Aguiar, the Portuguese all-female team, finished the day in 5th overall showing that when the going gets tough women get going.

The Russian team from Pirogovo managed to stay at the top of the 32 boat result table after the second and last day of racing in Cascais. Heavy and shifty winds and fierce competition left everything open until the end. Team MST after two wins yesterday had a slightly more challenging day on Day 2.

After two fourth places at the first two races of the day they were sitting around the same position going into the third beat of the last race with the Team of Carl Linne II with Diogo Barros at the helm leading the race and the series at that time. But the Russians, got their act together, pulled a strong last leg to finish second just behind the Portuguese, tie the series and break the tie in their favour by number of first places.

The Ukranian champions, team #GameChanger of Julia Freespirit closed the podium after a super solid performance with 2, 7, 2 on the day. Congratulations!

It was a remarkable day, with the fleet at the top staying close, keeping the fighting alive and exciting to follow in these extreme conditions. It was just beautiful! In the end and again everybody happy. Mikhail Loskov of team No Pasaran also from Pirogovo, Russia didn’t spend to much words explaining why he already booked his February trip to Cascais “We just love it here”.

Congratulations to all the sailors for a great display, Clube Naval de Cascais for another spotless organisations and the race committee to make it look easy to make it happen in such tough conditions. More next month!
