2015 SB20 French National Championship in Hyeres, France
Hyeres as usual for the first day of the French Sailing Federation National Championship for the SB20 Class. With a bright blue sky and 23 degrees in the shade, short sleeve tops and shorts were a must for the first race.
This is the 37th edition of the end of the season regatta run by the COYCH Club in Hyeres and it is also a moment for the SB20 class in France to wrap up a great season.
The current World Champion team Give Me Five will try to show that they haven’t lost their touch since their win in Torbole this past July. Team Melston (5th at the Worlds this year) are back to one their favorite racing spots and will certainly be in contention for a place on the podium. Black Magic (9th at the Worlds this year) team are also looking to have a good showing at the event. Finally after finishing 2nd at the Grand Slam in Hyeres this past May, VIS Sailing Team (RUS 3707) is back to take the top spot which they should have had at the Grand Slam.
The first race today was won by Team Melston following a slow spinnaker setting by the Black Magic who had been leading the race until the final run. Give Me Five finished right behind these first two boats. For the second race, the pin was slightly favored and Black Magic, VIS and Give Me Five were fighting it out for the pin. VIS ended up over early and had to turn back and Black Magic and Give Me Five slipped away with great starts. However, imagine their surprise when they got to the top mark to find VIS is back in 2nd place after banging hard the right corner after going back for the start. Black Magic took the win with VIS holding on to 2nd in front of Give Me Five.
The top 3 boats after the first day of racing are:
- Black Magic with 3 points
- Team Melston with 5 points
- Give Me Five with 6 points
With two more days of racing, this Championship is still wide open.
