19 May 2013 – Cowes, UK – “Good weather for ducks” is probably the best way to describe conditions on the final day of the 2013 Musto Vice Admiral’s Cup, where grey was the predominant colour and oilskins were the preferred attire (good news for sponsor Musto!). Fortunately nothing could dampen the spirits of the 58 competing teams who took on two final races to decide this hugely competitive series. Winds were predominantly from the northeast, but with some very big shifts and velocity ranging from sub five to around ten knots the tacticians and trimmers certainly got a strenuous workout. Once again Rob Lamb took the small boat fleet onto the Bramble Bank and Bob Milner returned to the Ryde Bank area with the big boats.

Tony Langly’s Weapon of Choice continued to dominate the TP52s of Class 0, scoring two further wins to take the series by a five-point margin. Sir Keith Mills 5 West and Johnny Vincent’s Pace traded places through the day with each boat claiming a second and a third place but it was 5 West who took the second podium step with Pace five points behind her. After racing double Olympic Silver Medallist and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Volvo Race skipper Ian Walker, who was guest staring as tactician aboard Weapon of Choice, was full of praise for his crew’s teamwork and expertise and also paid tribute to the race committee saying “They did a good job to get the racing in, particular in today’s conditions. It was a fun regatta and we had some really close racing.”

In Class 1 for the Farr 45s, Jeff Blue’s Espresso Martini and Stewart Whitehead’s Rebel both did their best to unseat overnight leader Kolga, owned by James French, but ultimately Kolga tenaciously hung onto her lead and won the final race of the series and the regatta by six points from Espresso Martini. Rebel won today’s opening race and followed this up with a third, which put them onto equal points with Espresso Martini, but were pushed down to third on count back.

The final result of the J/111s in Class 2 went down to a protest between Duncan McDonald and Phil Thomas’s Shmokin’ Joe and Tony Mack’s McFly regarding a pair of incidents on the run into and rounding of the leeward mark in the final race. McFly protested Shmokin’ Joe about an overlap issue in the approach to the mark, followed by a claim that their spinnaker sheet made contact with the mark. The Protest Committee elected to hear both protests together and ultimately found that Shmokin’ Joe had not infringed. A very relieved Shmokin’ Joe were delighted to claim overall victory in the class from James Arnell’s Jeez Louise. Having had to pull out of yesterday’s race seven David and Kirsty Apthorp’s J-Dream was back in the hunt today and a third and fourth place put them into third overall, just one point ahead of McFly.

In Class 3 for the J/109s, William Edwards’ Fardonyx and David Richard’s Jumping Jellyfish battled it out for supremacy with each boat adding a and second and a first to their totals. For Jumping Jellyfish the hard work paid off with overall victory by a confident twelve-point margin, but Fardonyx had to settle for fifth overall having been unable to compete on the opening day. The battle for second and third was incredibly close with half a dozen boats in contention for a podium place going into the day. Paul James of Jigsaw had held second place on count back from Tony Dickin aboard Jubilee, but just couldn’t seem to find traction in the difficult conditions and after two disastrous results dropped down into sixth. Jubilee meanwhile played it conservatively taking a third and fifth and put themselves onto the second step of the podium. Thanks to a third place in the final race Steve and Jody Maine’s J2eau snatched third overall, just one point ahead of Andy Johns and David Rolfe’s Shadowfax.

The Quarter Tonners in Class 4 saw their second dead heat of the series, between Sam Laidlaw’s Aquila and Louise Morton’s Espada for fourth place in race seven. Once again this historic revival class provided some of the best thrills and spills of the day with two different race winners in the shape of Willy McNeill and Mike Pascall’s Illegal Immigrant in race seven and Rob Gray’s Cote in race eight. Peter Morton aboard Bullit had to be content with a pair of second places, but this was enough to give him the overall series by 4.5 points. The tousle for second and third went down to the closing moments of the final race with Aquila grabbing second from Rickard Melander’s Alice II by two points.

For many of the Quarter Ton teams this was a first opportunity to test their metal against their competitors in preparation for the 2013 Quarter Ton Cup, which will be hosted by the Royal Corinthian from 15-17 July. Amongst the new faces in the fleet were Richard Fleck and his crew sailing Per Elisa who were delighted with their ninth place with Richard saying, tongue in cheek, “Anywhere was better than last!” Also very pleased to be racing against the full Quarter Ton fleet for the first time was Panic’s new owner Geoff Gritton, who had travelled down from the East Coast specially for the event. Having completely refitted Panic over the past winter they were looking extremely smart and were very pleased to achieve several top ten results. “It’s been a steep learning curve but we’ve loved it and are looking forward to racing against the full fleet in July.” Said Geoff.

The Llewellyn/Wakefield/Virgus partnerships Henri-Lloyd/Forelle Estates had put in such a consistently good performance in the SB20s Class 5 that they did not need to sail in the final race, winning the regatta overall by eight points. Whilst the winner might have been clear cut, second through fourth were anything but, with three boats all tied on 22 points at the end of the series. On count back Jerry Hill’s Sportsboatworld.com took second place from Scott Graham’s Chill Pill +, with Craig Burlton’s Gill Race Team sliding into forth.

Sadly Mark Lloyd’s Chaos was unable to race today, giving Andrew Pearce’s Ker 40 Magnum III a clear run at victory in the two-boat Class 6 for 39-43 footers. Although they were already certain of victory, Magnum III still elected to come out and race today and make the most of the great courses laid on by the Musto Vice Admiral’s Cup race management teams.

Speaking at the prize giving, event originator and winner of Class 4 Peter Morton thanked event sponsor Musto for their most generous ongoing support of the regatta. He also paid tribute to the competitors for making this one of the biggest Musto Vice Admiral’s Cup entries ever and recognised that the success of the event was entirely down to their good will and enthusiasm. Originally conceived as a fun way to fill the gap left by the cancelled Admiral’s Cup of 2005, Peter noted that the event’s willingness to evolve to meet the sailors’ needs was a major part of its appeal and he asked everyone to continue providing their feedback to help with future planning.

18 May 2013 – Cowes, UK – The second day of racing at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club’s 2013 Musto Vice Admiral’s Cup brought a mixed bag of weather. Morning saw very light airs and weak sunshine forcing the race committee to postpone. After an hour’s delay racing began under steely skies in a shifty and patchy breeze of circa five knots from the west-south-west. As the day wore on the wind built slowly, maxing out at around ten to twelve knots by mid afternoon, and the sun eventually put in a most welcome late appearance.

With the Solent jam packed with dozens of events and classes, Bob Milner elected to take the big boats west for clear air and set up shop off the entrance to Beaulieu River. Meanwhile Robert Lamb managed to find a nice corridor for the small boat fleet up and down the Bramble Bank. Both fleets completed three races today.

Class 0 may comprise just three TP52s but that’s no bar to great competition with the three boats rounding every mark within seconds. Although Sir Keith Mills’ 5 West took first blood in race five followed by a pair of seconds, it was Tony Langley’s Weapon of Choice that claimed boat of the day for the second day running, winning races six and seven and finishing second in race five, giving them a two point overall margin on 5 West. Johnny Vincent’s Pace was hard on the leading pairs heels all day but simply couldn’t break through so goes into the final day five points adrift in third overall.

In Class 1, for the three Farr 45s, overnight leader Espresso Martini, helmed by Jeff Blue, could not match yesterday’s form adding a second and a pair of thirds to their score card and dropping down into second overall. Espresso Martini’s loss was Kolga’s gain as James French and his team put in a bravura performance to win all three races and jump into a four point overall lead. Rebel, helmed by Stewart Whitehead scored a third and two seconds and now sits just one point behind Espresso Martini.

James Arnell’s Jeez Louise hung onto the overall lead in Class 2, the J/111s, by the skin of his teeth. He went into the day with a single point lead and added a pair of seconds and a bullet to his score so now counts 10 points overall. Top performer of the day was Duncan McDonald and Phil Thomas’s Shmokin’ Joe with a pair of first followed by a second, which jumps them up for third overall into second on count back sharing equal points with Jeez Louise. David and Kirsty Apthorp’s J-Dream had a mixed day with a third and fourth followed by a did not finish and they drop down from second overall to third, six points behind the leaders.

David Richards’ Jumping Jellyfish put in another very conservative day with a four, two, four score and continues to lead the J/109s in Class 3 with a seven point margin. Paul James’s Jigsaw turned the tables after yesterday’s mediocre performance and jumped from ninth overall to second with the help of a pair of wins and a sixth place. Tony Dickin, helming Jubilee, moved up from fourth to third and is now tied on equal points with Jigsaw. Last night’s second placed Shadowfax, owned by Andy Johns and David Rolfe, struggled in the light airs finishing ninth and tenth before recovering with a second in the windier last race. As a result they drop down from third to fourth overall, but are only one point behind Jigsaw and Jubilee. Top J/109 performer today was Fardonyx, helmed by William Edwards, with a pair of thirds and a first, however they were unable to sail yesterday so currently lie ninth overall.

It was all change amongst the Quarter Tonners of Class 4 where the pace was fast and furious. The ever-wily Peter Morton and his team aboard Bullit were in flying form. They struggled a little in the light and shifty race four and finished in fourth as a result, but as the breeze built they found their form and went on to win races five and six. This jumps them up on the leader board from third to first with a two-point margin. Overnight leader Sam Laidlaw aboard Aquila had a very mixed day with a fifth and a second followed by a seventh, their worst result of the series. This dropped them out of the overall lead and they now sit two points behind Bullit. Also on top form was Rickard Melander’s Alice II who claimed the opening race and followed up with a third and a second to move up from seventh to third overall, pushing Ian Southworth’s Whiskers down to fourth.

The sixteen strong SB20 fleet of Class 5 enjoyed another day of close combat with the Llewellyn/Wakefield Virgus partnership’s Henri-Lloyd/Forelle Estates winning two races and Jerry Hill’s Sportsboatworld.com one. Henri-Lloyd/Forelle Estates also added a third place to their card to retain the overall lead and extend their delta to six points. Scott Graham’s Chill Pill + and Craig Burlton’s Gill Race Team both added twelve points to their scores today and once the discard was allocated Chill Pill + retains second place and Gill Race Team third with the margin between them now narrowed to two points. Sportsboatworld.com’s win in race five helped pull them up into fourth and going into the final day they are just two points off a podium position.

In the two-boat Class 6 Andrew Pearce’s Magnum II won all three races and now leads Mark Lloyd’s Chaos by five points.

With so much to play for in each of the classes tomorrow’s final races will be crucial and we can look forward to some thrilling deciders. The forecast is for grey skies and rain with a variable six to eight knots from the northeast, which will back to northwest around lunchtime. Although the Notice of Race allows for up to twelve races in total there is a final start cut off time of 14.30 so in reality only two more races are likely.

17 May 2013 – Cowes, UK – With up to four frenetic races there was plenty of action for the 56 competitors taking part in today’s opening round of the 2013 Musto Vice Admiral’s Cup being hosted by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Cowes. The three-day event features seven classes, ranging from the SB20s at one end of the spectrum, all the way to the TP52s at the other.

Race Officers Bob Milner, officiating for the bigger boats, and Robert Lamb, on the small boat course, kept their customer’s good and busy with some great windward leeward racing on Central Solent courses in a variable 8-15 knots from the north east. The smaller boats managed three races whilst the larger boats pushed through and went for a fourth.

Class 0, for the 50-52 footers, was an all TP52 affair and Tony Langley’s Weapon of Choice, Keith Mills 5 West and Johnny Vincent’s Pace enjoyed fantastic racing with each boat claiming a victory. Weapon of Choice was the only boat to claim two wins, in races one and two, and as a result now leads the class by a single point from 5 West. Pace claimed race three and 5 West race four, but overall 5 West takes second with Pace a single point behind in third.

Class 1, for the 44-46 footers, featured three Farr 45s and was equally close. This time Jeff Blue’s Expresso Martin was the boat that claimed races one and two and they followed this up with a third and second to lead the fleet overall by two points. Stewart Whithead’s Rebel and Ash Holmes’ Kolga won a race each and tonight the boats are tied on 9 points with Kolga claiming second place on count back despite scoring an OCS in race two.

Class 3s six J/111s proved to be a three way battle between James Arnell’s Jeez Louise, David and Kirsty Apthorp’s J-Dream and Duncan McDonald & Phil Thomas’s Shmokin’ Joe. The only boat that was able to challenge the trio all day was Tony Mack’s McFly who made the podium twice with a second in race two and a third in race four, which put them into fourth overall at the end of the day. With a 1, 3, 3, 1 scoreline it was Jeez Louise that took J/111 of the day by a single point from J-Dream. Shmokin’ Joe showed great speed, but a lost protest in the fourth race, which means that although they still hold onto fourth place they are now four points behind J-Dream and only a single point ahead of McFly.

Class 6, for the 39-43 footers, was the final group on the big boat course and with only two entries it was more a case of match racing than fleet racing. Mark Lloyd’s Mills 43 Chaos took on Andrew Pearce’s Ker 40 Magnum III but could only gain the upper hand in the final race of the day. As a result Magnum III goes into day two with a two-point lead over Chaos.

What the fleets on the small boat course lack in size they more than make up for in numbers. Class 4 featured thirteen J/109s with a different winner for each of their three races. First to show was David Richard’s Jumping Jellyfish who claimed race one and went on to add a third and a fourth to their scoreline to take the overall lead with eight points. Andy Johns and David Rolfe’s Shadowfax got her regatta off to a slightly wobbly start with a seventh place but won race two and took third in race three to claim second place overall on eleven points. Just one point behind them is Steve and Jody Maine’s J2eau who won the final race of the day.

As usual some of the closest racing of all was to be found among the revival Quarter Ton Class which attracted fifteen entries. This fleet always delivers spectacularly close racing and today was no exception with boats finishing neck and neck both on the water and on corrected time in every race. The closest finish of the day was a dead heat for second place in race one between Peter Morton’s Bullit and Sam Laidlaw’s Aquila. Winner of races one and two was Ian Southworth sailing Whiskers. Sadly for Southy his luck didn’t hold in the final race where he finished sixth putting him into second overall. After their dead heat for second in race one Aquila went on to take two more seconds giving them the overall lead with 6.5 points, a point and a half ahead of Whiskers. Peter Morton’s wife Louise, sailing Espada, had an excellent day and tonight lies in fourth place just 3.5 points behind her husband who is in third having added a fifth and a third to his card.

The SB20 fleet may be last in our report, but they are by no means least with the largest entry of all the classes at sixteen boats. Race one went to Scott Graham’s Chill Pill + but they couldn’t maintain their supremacy and it was the Llewellyn/Wakefield/Virgus partnership aboard Henri-Lloyd/Forelle Estates that charged through to win races two and three and take the overall lead by a single point from Chill Pill +. Craig Burlton’s Gill Race Team put in a steady opening day and their 2, 3, 6 scoreline gives them eleven points and third overall, four behind Chill Pill +. The top five is completed by Tom Foskett’s What Recession? on thirteen points and Jerry Hill’s Sportsboatworld.com on 14.

After racing competitors enjoyed the Musto Competitor’s Drinks Reception where daily prizes were presented.

The regatta continues until Sunday with up to 12 races scheduled. Tomorrow the wind is forecast to go round into the west at around seven to ten knots with the first warning signals planned for 10.25.

First Grand Slam event hailed a great success.

The first SB20 class Grand Slam event of the season was held this weekend in Hyeres, France. 3 days of racing were scheduled between 3rd and 5th May. A quality fleet representing 7 nations arrived to warm sunny 22 degrees – a welcome change for sailors from our rather cool Spring in the UK.

Day one was sailed in a building sea breeze that increased from 12 knots at the start of race one to 22 knots at the end of race four. The first 3 races were dominated by John Pollard’s “Xcellent” team from Royal Torbay Yacht Club, starting well, crossing the fleet and heading hard right. Pollard’s team had the speed and strategy to stay ahead. SB20 Class President Ed Russo sailing for France and the new Russian team of Kirill Frolov, were also fairing well in brand new Sportsboat World boats. By the 4th race the breeze had built and the fleet were enjoying fast downwind planing conditions. Pollard again led to the windward mark, however gybe sets from Helena Lucas, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz and Jerry Hill took them into the top 3 places at the bottom mark with Hill finally getting through to first place by the end of the race.

Saturday was a bit hazier and lighter and it looked clear that the sea breeze was unlikely to settle. Instead after a short delay the Race Officer managed to get in 3 races in 5 knots of patchy shifty breeze. The Brits of Pollard and Hill struggled to find the best way up the first beats in all 3 races, however Kirill Frolov and Ed Russo clearly had a much better handle on the conditions, Kirill winning the first two races and Russo scoring a top three in each race.

With no racing on Sunday, as the breeze was even more unsteady and rarely reaching 3 knots the fleet headed back into port with the Russian team of Kirril Frolov helmed by Alexey Murashkin winning on countback from Ed Russo, John Pollard was left in 3rd place.

The Russian team were popular winners and this win bodes well for a packed season for this new team. Helena Lucas in her first event picked up the Clarins sponsored prize for first Lady helm/crew team finishing in 5th place, and Michel Boussard’s team from Monaco picked up the Masters prize.

With some lively evenings in Bar Sax, the fleet had a really enjoyable event. Many of the competitors now will move on to the next Grand Slam at Malcesine on Lake Garda where 40 boats are expected to compete at the end of May.

One year has passed since the SB20 Class was launched by the newly appointed builders Sportsboat World. A lot of improvements have been made for SB20 owners in the past 12 months. Spare parts, sails and new boats are readily available. Manufacturing of the SB20 returned to UK shores and stringent quality control. Parts that previously failed on a regular basis have been re-engineered, improved and released. The first World Championship was held outside of Europe at Hamilton Island, Queensland, Australia in December 2012 and tomorrow the first Grand Slam event begins in Hyeres, France. A great success story by anybody’s measure!

Twenty-five boats are expected to compete at the Hyeres Grand Slam this weekend representing seven countries; France, UK, Monaco, Germany, Italy, Russia and Lithuania. The Grand Slam has attracted a high calibre of entries including Helena Lucas, gold medallist in the 2.4mR class at the London 2012 Paralympics. Jean-Baptiste Bernaz, the French representative in the Laser class at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 will compete at the Grand Slam fresh from his 5th place at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Hyeres last week. Alexey Murashkin, Jerry Hill and John Pollard add further quality to the fleet.

Three days of racing are scheduled in Hyeres, where good breeze is forecast and temperatures will punch into the twenties. At the end of May, the Grand Slam moves on to Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy before the four day Grand Slam finale at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, UK.

The SB20 Grand Slam events are aimed at those in the class that enjoy sailing in beautiful places and enjoy a lively social scene. Each SB20 Grand Slam will have a winner in its own right and while sailors will be encouraged to take part in as many events as possible, there will not be an overall Grand Slam Champion.

In September 2013, Hyeres will play host to the SB20 Class World Championships.

3 new SportsBoatWorld SB20s joined the 17 strong fleet for two days of great racing on the first of the two weekend Warsash Spring Championship.

It was great to see the line-up of new teams joining the fleet, visitors all the way from Russia and a bunch of old hands, including 2 SB20 World Champions and 3 ex-National Champions, all greeted by a steady 10 knot breeze and 2 days of sunshine on the familiar race track off Hill Head.

The racing was as close as ever in this fast paced one design fleet, producing 4 different race winners across 6 races, 2 tied finishes too close for the PRO to call, and places continually changing throughout. The new boats occupied 3 of the top 5 spots overall for the weekend, and everyone was impressed with the quality of the new build.

Jerry Hill’s new SportsBoatWorld entry GBR 3714 finished 3rd overall on her first outing. SportsboatWorld was collected from the builder in Brightlingsea, Essex on Wednesday and rigged “straight out of the box” with no extra “race prep” needed. “She even bounces well,” explained Jerry after his attempt to squeeze in at the top mark against foul tide in the last race causing one of the best pile ups the fleet has seen in a while!

GBR3082, Henri Lloyd / Forelle Estates, sailed by Joe Llewellyn, Nigel Wakefield and Jerry Vigus put in the most consistent performance across the weekend to take the top spot, with all results in the top three and two race wins. They were pushed hard by Krill Frolov’s Russian Team in RUS 3708 Melstonteam who lie 2nd, Jerry Hill’s GBR 3714 SportsBoatWorld in 3rd, current World Champion Geoff Carveth’s GBR3053 WKD in 4th and the all new GBR3710 Chill Pill, sailed by Scott Graham and Nick Elder in 5th. Ian Armstrong (GBR3276), Tom Clay (GBR3106) and Tim Newton (GBR3362) were all also finding strong race pace and mixing it in the top 3 places through the weekend.

With only 11 points separating the top 4 overall, it’s all to play for in the remaining 7 races, where we’re expecting to see even more boats on the start line next weekend, combining as the first official event in the SB20 UK Solent Series. There are always people in the class looking for crew and although second hand boats get snapped up very quickly, they represent great value for money at the moment – just visit us on the class forum or our Facebook page to find out more and get involved.

“It’s been a long time since I had so much fun on the water”. This comes from Achille Onorato, the Italian skipper on Mascalzone Latino, who finished third in the Smeralda 888 series at the Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse.

Following the first session last weekend with six one-design series (Longtze Premier, Dragon, J/24, Platu25, Surprise and Star series), Monaco’s bay again delivered a varied regatta full of surprises. From bright blue skies on Friday to the scattering of snow on Saturday, not to mention the tail end of a Mistral, the weather conditions delighted the IRCs and the three mono-hull series: Smeralda 888s, SB20s and J/70s.

Even though conditions were not quite good enough to race on the Sunday, due to the centre of a depression in the Gulf of Genoa changing tack, five very enjoyable races were started over this second weekend compared to six last weekend.

With 14 nationalities present and a high level of competition, the Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse confirmed its demanding reputation and quality for all 130 yachts, a total of 600 sailors who come back every year from all horizons to line up on the start.

SB20s: top level racing in anticipation of World Championship
Following Friday’s British domination by John Pollard (5th in the 2011 World Championship) who had come to try out the Monaco waters, the experience and wisdom of the Class’ President Edward Russo made the difference in the final analysis, with tactics by Sébastien Col assisted by Gilles Favennec. “With Seb, it’s always so easy! We were treated to the full range of conditions, which proved an enormous challenge for the team, forcing us to constantly trim the boat throughout the races,” admitted Edward Russo, who managed to steer clear of front-line Laser specialist, Jean-Baptiste Bernaz.

Ranked 10th at the London Olympics in the Laser class, this young sailor took the opportunity to race with his father and brother. “I came here to have fun, my brother wanted to get involved and for this first race together we are on the podium!”

The level was high, including Black Pearl’s German team led by Stefan Jentzsch for whom the Primo Cup is a chance to get training in prior to the Soto40 race season starting in the spring: “It’s important for us to sail at such a top level during the winter months in one-design, on a smaller craft such as the SB20. The Primo Cup allowed us to challenge the best international teams”.

It was a very encouraging start for the season which allowed crews in this series to train for the World Championship, due to be held from 7 to 14 September 2013 in Hyères (France). Note that after the championship, the Yacht Club de Monaco will welcome any of the SB20s who want to train and race all winter until the next edition of the Primo Cup in 2014. The Monaco fleet has four boats, with young sailors trained by the YCM Sailing School ready for the challenge ahead.

Once again this year the first three crews in each series received items of clothing from SLAM’s Advanced Technology Sportswear line. Another highlight was the lucky draw for the gold ingot donated by Credit Suisse which was won by the crew of Challenger, an IRC boat.

The rendezvous for 2014 has already been set for the 30th edition which will take place 31st January to 2nd February and 7th to 9th February. Significantly, the regatta will be registered as part of the IRC Mediterranean Championship.

In the meantime, the YCM will host from the 8th to 10th March 2013, a new Team Racing event in J/24s as well as the J/24 European Championship, organised from the 6th to 12th October 2013.

Today was given the start of the second weekend of the 29th Primo Cup – Trophée Credit Suisse in a well established 10 knots south-westerly wind, with beaming sunshine and calm sea, reaching 30 knots by the end of the day. Three races were started for the three one-design series (Smeralda 888s, SB20s and J/70s), whilst IRCs were given two races. An international set of competitors, with top level sailors totalling 47 entries, including Olympic Games sailors such as Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (10th rank at the London Olympic Games) and offshore seasoned sailors, such as Sébastien Col (winner during the Tour de France’s last edition)…

Experience paid off, the Race Committee and notably its mark layer Josh Warren, anticipated the buoys positions to let tacticians and skippers alike express themselves on the water.

Full marks, with three victories in all, for Socca Team, the Monegasque team, helmed by Guido Miani, who marks its leadership from the start with Extravaganza by Vertigo, with skipper Marco Salci and Mascalzone Latino, helmed by Achille Onorato.

In SB20s, John Pollard’s British team, hold the level quite high in front of Jean-Baptiste Bernaz’s family crew (2nd at the provisory general ranking) and in front of the Class’s President, Edward Russo aboard Black Magic.

New series in Monaco, voted Boat of the Year 2012, the J/70 has managed to seduce many young sailors. Fun and fast sailing this 7-meter keelboat has delivered all its promises in the Monegasque bay. On the results side, the Italian crew of Fremito d’Arja, lead the race by two wins out of the three races, followed very closely by Italian Spin One and Dutch Henri Lloyd, three top crew only 5 points away from each others.

In IRCs, with a longer race lay out of 8 nautical miles (as opposed to the traditional 5,5 nm for all other series), just two races were completed today. British Checkmate’s crew lead by Nigel Biggs leads by far in added time the entire series. Let’s pay tribute to Eleuthera’s second place, skippered by Marc Pajot and his two daughters, last edition’s winner. The impressive Speedy, winner in real time, does not manage to hold its ranking due to its rating, and is finishing 6th in the provisory general ranking.

Races start tomorrow at 10.00am.

SB20 class after 3 races)

1. John Pollard, John Pollard, (GBR) 4pts
2. Bernaz, Jean Baptiste Bernaz, (FRA) 7pts
3. Black Magic, Edward Russo, (FRA) 8pts

The Russian SB20 fleet has seen significant growth since 2009 and the Russian teams are highly competitive on the international circuit. Today there are 23 boats in Russia and there is strong growth forecast for the coming years.

The Yacht Club Hercules organised the finish of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race and has experience in hosting European championships.
The SB20 Class received four high quality bids from yacht clubs in sailing hot spots around the world to host the 2014 World Championships. “It’s been a difficult task separating these bids from each other,” explained Ed Russo, SB20 World Council President, “And we are extremely appreciative of the effort and interest from these competing Clubs.”

Ahead of the 2014 World Championships in St. Petersburg, the SB20 Fleet will contest their 2013 World Championships in Hyeres, France from September 7th to the 13th where a fleet of over 100 SB20 boats is expected.
